Navigation Training
Being able to Navigate is one of those core life skills that enable us to enjoy our natural wide open spaces.
We run introductory courses for those starting to learn all the way through to technical exploration navigation skills needed in the less frequented regions of our planet.
As a National Navigation Award Scheme Provider we provide training, assessment and certification of competence in finding your way around our wilderness areas.

Introduction to Navigation
This is an introductory course to are fundamental when starting to learn and understand how to navigate.
The course covers the following:
- What is a map & how does it work.
- Finding where you are, where you want to go & how to get there.
- Introduction to using a compass.
- Planning then navigating your route.
- Continuous supervision.
- 1 day Duration 0930hrs - 1700hrs.

NNAS Bronze Award
This is a two day course including training and assessment Planning and implementing simple and safe walks
The course covers the following:
- Intro to a variety of maps and scales, map symbols and contours,
- Grid references,
- Orientating the map with and without a compass and matching map to ground and identifying features,
- simple navigation strategies
- Estimate distance on both map and ground,
- Recognising navigation errors and how to relocate,
- Equipment and safety procedures

NNAS Silver Award
If you have the skills of a Bronze navigator then the Silver award develops by introducing higher levels of competence. Note having the Bronze NNAS award is not mandatory.
- Plan a strategical navigation route & using tick off features.
- Apply navigation strategies EG. aiming off, attack points & collecting features.
- Identify contour features.
- Route choice & influencing factors.
- Accurately measuring distance, using timing & pacing.
- Relocation strategies.
- Acurate use of a compass to follow bearings, checking the direction of linear features.
- Effects of weather, fatigue and physical discomfort and understand emergency procedures.
- Countryside responsibilities, impact of walkers & access legislation.
- Plan and implement a safe walk using the above skills.

NNAS Night Owl
Its all different when the sun goes down - how to Nav at night.
On this course you will learn those skills and techniques that get us from A-B in the darkness.
The course covers the following:
- Speed, time, and distance calculations.
- Pacing and contour reading.
- Relocation techniques.
- Spatial awareness in low visibility.
- Navigation strategies (attack points, collecting features, aiming off, hand-railing).
- Dead reckoning.
- Effective use of navigation kit

Navigation Assessment Preparation
Got an assessment coming up & want to know where you are. This is one on one tuition where we will run you through the requirements for your assessment.
This is positive learning where we will set assessment type tasks & expectations. We work with you on solving the problem, developing the knowledge & linking it all together.
We cant promise a pass but pass on our knowledge so you have a full tool box and show you how to use it.

Exploration Navigation
Going to the greater ranges or the most wild areas of the planet. Be it polar, desert, jungle or mountain we will introduce and train you in the forms of navigation that you may need.
Not everywhere has accurate maps, grid referencing systems. Sometimes the compass point direction will be confusing. Some places it just doesn't work.
We will show you the methods and techniques, plus the use of additional tools and resources too assist you in your adventure.
This course expects the participant to be at NNAS Silver or MTA Hill & Moorland level as a minimum.
