Important
This is the absolute minimum
Add whatever else you may need for your trip.
At the planning stage, consider
- The environment: mountain, moorland, coastal?
- Do you have a right of access, or is permission needed? If not, choose somewhere you do.
- The forecast for the full duration.
- The camp location: valley, summit, ridge? You want flat ground sheltered from weather, flooding and high wind.
- The nearest water. Is it safe to drink, or does it need purifying?
- Sanitation. Find out the local rules and expectations.
Leave no trace
- Arrive late in the day and leave first thing in the morning.
- Keep away from, and out of sight of, roads, buildings and livestock.
- Keep tent numbers small and choose natural colours.
- Tell someone your plans.
- If a landowner asks you to leave or pay a small fee, oblige politely.
